Doors Off Helicopter Tours in Kauai

Choose your view of Kauai: a private R44 with no middle passenger seats, a four-passenger Hughes 500, or a six-passenger ASTAR. Compare seating first, then flight length. Every doors-off option here departs from Lihue Airport.

Plan for an open cabin

  • Seats: provide accurate passenger weights; seating is assigned for balance.
  • Clothing: wear secure shoes and bring a light layer for wind.
  • Cameras: follow the crew’s rules for securing phones and equipment.
  • Check-in: use your tour’s Lihue meeting instructions and arrival time.

Open cabins are windy. If you prefer an enclosed flight, compare doors-on ASTAR options or keep your R44 door on.

What will you see?

45–60 minute island flights

The R44, full-length Hughes 500 and ASTAR flights explore Kauai’s coast, canyons and green interior. Highlights may include the Nā Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon and waterfall-lined valleys.

20-minute Hughes 500

A shorter flight into the island’s interior. Choose it for a brief doors-off experience; it does not include the Nā Pali Coast.

Weather shapes every route. Flight length gives you more time in the air, not a promise of a particular waterfall or landmark.

Before you reserve

Which doors-off helicopter has no middle passenger seats?

The Robinson R44 carries 2–3 guests on a private flight, with one guest in front and two in the rear. Every passenger sits beside a door opening. The Hughes 500 has one front middle passenger seat; the six-passenger ASTAR includes interior seats.

Do doors-off flights see the Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon?

The longer island flights aim to take in Kauai’s major aerial highlights, including the Nā Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon and interior valleys. The 20-minute Hughes 500 flight is a shorter inland route and does not include the Nā Pali Coast. Clouds, wind and visibility determine the actual route; no specific landmark is guaranteed.

Where do these doors-off tours depart?

All three options on this page depart from Lihue Airport (LIH). The meeting office, check-in time and directions depend on the selected flight. Use your booking confirmation rather than going to the airline passenger terminal.

Can I choose my seat?

Seat requests are subject to weight and balance, and a particular seat cannot be promised. The R44 has no middle guest seat regardless of the seating assignment. For Hughes 500 parties of three or four, at least one guest must meet the front middle seat limit of 150 lb and 5 ft 10 in. Tell us everyone’s accurate body weight before booking.

Is a doors-off flight better for photography?

An open doorway removes window reflections from your view and photographs. Door-side and interior seats offer different angles, which is why cabin layout matters. Secure your camera or phone exactly as instructed, keep it inside the cabin and follow the crew’s rules for straps and loose items.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear secure footwear and comfortable clothing; a light layer helps with wind and cooler air in flight. Leave hats and loose belongings behind. Review the selected tour’s camera, phone and clothing rules before check-in, as equipment requirements differ.

Can children fly with the doors off?

Age and seating rules vary by flight. R44 doors-off passengers must be at least 12; younger children may require their own door to remain on. Hughes 500 doors-off flights start at age 10. Ask us to confirm the current ASTAR age rules and any child’s eligibility before requesting or paying for a flight.

What happens if weather affects my flight?

The pilot may change the route, delay departure or cancel if conditions require it. Rescheduling and refund terms depend on the flight you book. Choose an earlier day in your Kauai visit when possible to leave room for a weather-related change.

How do prices and booking work?

Use the live R44 and Hughes 500 calendar for current prices, taxes and available departures. The R44 is a private flight for your group; Hughes 500 seats are sold per passenger. ASTAR doors-off flights are requested through the form, and our team confirms pricing and availability before the reservation is finalized. No payment is taken by the request form.
