How to Choose Your Kauai Helicopter Tour

By Kauai Helicopter AdventuresPublished Updated

From a doors-off adventure to a private cabin, Kauai helicopter tours offer different ways to experience the island. Choose around your group, preferred cabin, flight length and the scenery you hope to see.

The typical experience

Many featured tours depart from Lihue. Longer flights may take in the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, Manawaiopuna Falls, Hanalei and Mount Waiʻaleʻale when conditions permit. Your selected tour description and confirmation give the departure details.

Routes change with weather and pilot discretion. A tour may be rerouted, delayed or cancelled; refund and rescheduling terms depend on the booking. No flight can guarantee a clear view of every landmark. Explore our Kauai flight experience guide for an overview of the scenery.

Compare time in the air

Our 20-minute Hughes 500 flight focuses on Kauai’s interior and the Mount Waiʻaleʻale area. It is a shorter introduction, not a full-island tour.

Flights of approximately 45–60 minutes provide different opportunities for island sightseeing. A full 60 minutes gives more time for scenic turns and exploration when conditions allow. Check whether the advertised duration includes ground time; arrival and briefing are additional to the flight itself.

Match the helicopter to your group

  • Hughes 500: a doors-off helicopter for up to four guests. Compare the front and rear views using the seating guide, including the requirements for the front middle position.
  • Robinson R44: a private flight for two or three guests, with doors-on or doors-off arrangements subject to the selected flight and conditions.
  • ASTAR: a cabin for up to six guests. The ASTAR tour page explains the flight options, general and front-row seating, and enclosed or doors-off choices.

Aircraft capacity is only part of the decision. Individual and combined weight limits, age, height and door configuration may affect which flight your party can book. Final seats are assigned for aircraft weight and balance.

Doors on or doors off?

A doors-off flight removes glass between the doorway and the scenery, which can be useful for photography. It also has additional clothing, camera and loose-item requirements. An enclosed cabin is a different experience, with views through the aircraft’s windows.

Review the selected tour’s rules, then read our helicopter photography tips if taking photographs is a priority.

Private flights, landings and larger groups

A private flight reserves the cabin for your group. It does not automatically include a customized route or unrestricted seat selection. A scenic landing is included only when it is specifically described in the selected tour.

For a group needing more than one aircraft, call 888-508-9948 to discuss available options. Coordinated departures depend on availability and operating conditions.

Use current prices and booking terms

Compare the live calendar’s current total fare, passenger options and cancellation terms. Historical blog prices are not a reliable quote for a new reservation. Check any upgrade costs and requirements before completing checkout.

If a helicopter is not the right match for your plans, our Kauai airplane tours offer panoramic window-seat sightseeing. The airplane-versus-helicopter guide compares the experiences side by side.
